Mustang Sally & The Hamjos - A Band of Champions
Six Musicians - Two State Champion Performers
Every band likes to promote itself as having 'winning' musicians, but the central Florida
Old-time music band, "Mustang Sally & the Hamjos" can truly call theirs 'A Band of Champions.'
Their leader, 'Mustang Sally' Anderson, has been playing hammered dulcimer for years, and has earned the
Old-Time Hammered Dulcimer Champion title for four years, the last time at the 2008 Florida Old-Time
Championship competition in Dade City. Well regarded both as a solo performer as well as a Hamjo musician,
she has a jest and energy for relating with the public as well as offering many styles of music played on
her Lee Spears Hammered Dulcimer. Besides performing with "Mustang Sally & The Hamjos," she also performs with
the Hammerhead Dulcimer Society of Tampa Bay.
While participating at the annual Florida Folk Festival in May, 2009, another band member,
Ron Smith, demonstrated his excellent old-time, clawhammer banjo technique and became the
2009 Florida State Old-Time Banjo Championship up at the Stephan Foster Cultural Folk Center and Park in White Springs. Florida Banjo Society's Chuck Levy awarded Ron the top prize of a Gold Tone Bob Carlin Model Banjo, which is produced in Titusville, Florida.
"Mustang Sally & The Hamjos," is composed of Sally Anderson on the Hammered Dulcimer, Pat Kochenburger on vocals
and wash-tub bass, Donny Lomnick on rhythm Guitar and Percussion, Dale Johnson on Guitar and Mandolin, Dick
Prince on Fiddle, Clawhammer Banjo and Guitar, and Ron Smith on Melodic Clawhammer Banjo and Vocals.
